When a Studer A80 tape machine arrived at his doorstep and couldnāt fit through the door, Floating Points (aka Sam Shepherd) took it as the spark to begin building the studio that would shape his debut albumĀ Elaenia. Moving beyond laptop-based production, Shepherd spent five years constructing the record while DJing around the world and completing a PhD in neuroscience.
The result is an ambitious and deeply personal work, drawing on classical, jazz, electronic, soul and Brazilian popular music. Named after a bird,Ā ElaeniaĀ captures the expansive, boundary-pushing vision that positionedĀ Floating PointsĀ as one of the most adventurous voices in contemporary music.
